BurnPro3D is designed for use in fire mitigation by land managers and burn bosses to prioritize land for treatment, and plan and conduct prescribed burns. The platform is powered by the next generation WIFIRE Data and Model Commons. It provides diverse users a common ground for understanding risks and tradeoffs related to prescribed burns through detailed models of vegetation and fire behavior.

BurnPro3D uses a coupled fire/atmosphere model to capture the interaction between user-defined complex ignition patterns and environmental conditions. With support from the National Science Foundation, the BurnPro3D team is developing emerging AI techniques to transform the characterization of the fire environment, including dynamic site-specific three-dimensional fuels and winds.

The High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN), a University of California San Diego partnership project led by the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, supports Internet-data applications in the research, education, and public safety realms.


HPWREN functions as a collaborative, Internet-connected cyberinfrastructure. The project supports a high-bandwidth wireless backbone and access data network in San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties in areas that are typically not well-served by other technologies to reach the Internet. This includes backbone locations, typically sited on mountain tops, to connect often hard-to-reach areas in the remote Southern California back country.

By embracing the principles of open AI and open science, both organizations are actively contributing to the global mission of promoting knowledge sharing and accelerating innovations in addressing critical environmental challenges. With Hugging Face's platform, they simplify geospatial model training and deployment, making it accessible for open science users, startups, and enterprises on multi-cloud AI platforms like watsonx. The mission of the LiDAR monitoring program is to develop efficient methods for monitoring our natural and cultural resources and to provide effective decision-support tools for land managers. This project is a collaborative effort developed with partners from USDA Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Universities and the New Mexico Consortium. This multidisciplinary team seeks to integrate LiDAR and modeling techniques to monitor fuels and ecosystems and link fire modeling for land management decision support. The ultimate goal is to standardize monitoring across agencies with uniform language, methods and data analysis.
